About PlantArt Gallery

Living art inspired by nature

PlantArt Gallery creates living artworks that bring the beauty and complexity of natural ecosystems into interior spaces.

Each piece is designed as a real, functioning ecosystem. Plants grow, interact, and evolve over time, creating something that is never static. Inspired by locations around the world, from tropical cloud forests to moss-covered European landscapes, every artwork captures the atmosphere of a specific place and translates it into a refined, living composition.

What is a PlantArt

A PlantArt is a living ecosystem presented as an artwork.

It combines carefully selected plants such as orchids, mosses, and carnivorous species with natural materials and a composition that is designed with both structure and balance in mind.

Unlike traditional art, a PlantArt changes over time. Growth, seasonal shifts, and subtle variations make each piece unique long after it has been installed.

Many works can be equipped with discreet automation systems that regulate light, humidity, and water cycles. This allows the ecosystem to follow natural rhythms while remaining practical for indoor environments.

The idea behind it

PlantArt is built on three core intentions.

It has an educational purpose, by making complex ecosystems visible and understandable.
It has an environmental purpose, by creating awareness of fragile natural habitats.
And it has an artistic purpose, by turning nature itself into a living design object.

At its core, PlantArt is about reconnecting people with nature in a direct and tangible way.

The creator

PlantArt Gallery was founded by Kjell Meershoek.

With more than 20 years of experience in terrariums and aquariums, his work is rooted in a deep understanding of small ecosystems and how they function. Over time, this experience developed into a focus on creating balanced environments that are not only biologically sound, but also visually compelling.

How it started

The idea for PlantArt emerged in 2020.

The goal was to move beyond traditional terrariums and create a new form of living art. The concept was a fully automated, open ecosystem that could exist as a hanging piece, combining natural beauty with technical precision and a clean, modern aesthetic.

From that moment, the project evolved into a series of works that represent different ecosystems from around the world, each one designed to bring a specific atmosphere into a space.

For artists

PlantArt Gallery is open to artists who work with living, biophilic art.

We believe that the intersection of nature and artistic expression is still largely unexplored, and we aim to create a platform where this form of art can grow and reach a wider audience.

Artists who create living artworks and share this vision are invited to collaborate with the gallery. Selected works can be presented, rented, and sold through PlantArt Gallery.
